To build a more resilient Maui County, we must recognize that our environment and economy are mutually dependent. True sustainability balances social and economic improvement while prioritizing the ecological health of the islands. Here is what you can personally do.Talk About It: Break the silence by engaging in science-based discussions. A stable climate, and ability to withstand disasters when they do happen, is the bedrock of tourism, agriculture and all other business on Maui. Resiliency strategies are key to public safety, and is a vital first step.
Adopt a “Whole Systems” Lens: Sustainability is not about denying growth; it’s about smart, balanced recovery and resiliency, ensuring that Maui remains a vibrant place to live and do business for generations to come (IPCC, 2021).
Participate in the Process: Direct community involvement in coastal management and wildfire mitigation protects our physical and economic assets. By supporting sustainable infrastructure, we foster an economy built to last.
Push for Decarbonization: Even if you never put solar on your home, if your utility source uses green renewable energy, you reduce your carbon footprint. Speak out against plans to build infrastructure for importing Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) from overseas; that same investment could decarbonize the grid and create local jobs.
Demand Plan Follow-through and Reporting: It is not enough to have a plan on paper. The County of Maui Climate Action and Resiliency Plan was adopted three years ago, yet its implementation has stalled, and the comprehensive public dashboard removed. Communicate that these measures must move beyond “projects in progress” to deliver real-world protection for our homes and businesses, with continual avenues for public discussion.
Advocate for Collaborative Governance: Support the re-establishment of a permanent, non-partisan County Office of Climate Change and Resiliency. This entity can bridge the gap between Emergency Management and economic recovery, ensuring our infrastructure remains resilient against future administration changes.
